Description
For persons who were covered by a general private health insurance plan (excluding single service plans), HIPOUTR reports if the person has a private health insurance plan paid for by someone outside of the household. HIPOUTR is constructed by IPUMS NHIS staff and summarizes information from the variables HIP1OUT and HIP2OUT (as well as HIP3OUT and HIP4OUT in 1997-2003). See the Comparability tab for.
Comparability
In 1997-2003, persons could report having up to four health insurance plans. Beginning in 2004, details were only collected about two health insurance plans for each person. If a person had more than one insurance plan and indicated that someone outside the household paid for any of these plans, they are categorized as responding "Yes" to HIPOUTR. If persons with multiple plans had responses including a combination of "No" and missing responses, those person's were classified as "Unknown" in response to HIPOUTR.
