Description
For sample adults ages 18 and older who have ever seen a health professional for symptoms of dizziness or a balance problem (BALSAWHPEV), BALSAWRN reports whether the person ever saw a nurse or nurse practitioner for the dizziness or balance problem.
This variable was part of the Sample Adult Balance Supplement, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.
Comparability
Please see Universe tab for changes in the universe over time. In 2008, this variable corresponds to the most bothersome dizziness symptom BALSBOTHER) and asked about seeing a doctor or health professional generally, with no specific recall period. In 2016, the question refers more generally to dizziness or balance problem(s) with a recall period of seeing a health professional or doctor during the last five years. Additionally, in 2016 the response category associated with this variable includes physician's assistants and nurse practitioners, while in 2008 it instead refers to a nurse or a nurse practitioner only, but does not mention physician's assistants.
Universe
- 2008: Sample adults age 18+ who have ever seen a health professional for symptoms of dizziness or a balance problem.
- 2016: Sample adults 18+ who had a balance or dizziness problem in the past 12 months or who had at least one symptom in the past 12 months AND who ever visited the hospital (including ER) about a dizziness or balance problem.
