Description
For sample adults and sample children (beginning in 2012) who have had symptoms of dizziness or a balance problem, BALSAWHPEV indicates whether the person ever saw a doctor or other health professional, except in the emergency room, for the dizziness or balance problem.
This variable was part of the Sample Adult or Sample Child Balance Supplement, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.
Comparability
Please see the Universe tab for information on how the universe changes for this variable over time. In 2008, this variable corresponds to the most bothersome dizziness symptom (BALSBOTHER). Beginning in 2012, the question refers more generally to whether the action usually happens around the same time as dizziness or balance problem(s).
Universe
- 2008: Sample adults age 18+ who have had symptoms of dizziness or at least one balance problem.
- 2012: Sample children 3+ who have had episodes of balance or dizziness in the past 12 months
- 2016: Sample adults 18+ who had a balance or dizziness problem in the past 12 months or who had at least one symptom in the past 12 months and sample children 3+ who have had episodes of balance or dizziness in the past 12 months.
