Description
For sample adults and sample children (beginning in 2012) who have had symptoms of dizziness or a balance problem, BALSAWHPEV indicates whether the person ever saw a doctor or other health professional, except in the emergency room, for dizziness or a balance problem.
Prior to 2023, the question for this variable occurred as part of the Sample Adult Balance Supplement, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. In 2023, the question for this variable occurred as part of the Sponsored Hearing section of the survey.
Comparability
Please see the Universe tab for information on how the universe changes for this variable over time. In 2008, this variable corresponds to the most bothersome dizziness symptom (BALSBOTHER). Beginning in 2012, the question refers more generally to whether the action usually happens around the same time as dizziness or balance problem(s).
The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
