Description

For sample adults who had at least one dizziness or balance problem in the last 12 months (BALDIZYR), BALPROBNO reports the total number of balance problems the person had in the last 12 months. Persons were asked a series of questions related to balance problems and could say yes or no to each. If more than one was named, the person was asked to identify the most bothersome balance problem (BALSBOTHER), and the inquiry proceeded to ask more specific questions on the diagnosis and treatment of this most bothersome symptom.

When asking whether the person had a specific balance problem, interviewers could mention, "Do not include times when drinking alcohol" if necessary.

This variable was part of the Sample Adult Balance supplement, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders.

Comparability

The universe changed between 2008 and 2016. In 2008, this variable includes all sample adults aged 18 or older who had symptoms of dizziness or at least one balance problem. In 2016, all sample adults aged 18 or older are included. This will affect comparability.
