Description
For persons age 18+ who have at least one activity limitation (LANY), and for whom an "other injury" (non-fracture/bone/joint injury) was reported as a condition causing any activity limitation (CLIMOTHINJ), CLIMOTHINJNO reports the number of time units which the respondent stated when reporting the duration of the other injury.
In 1997-2003, data on the duration of the limiting other injury were collected via the question, "How long [have/has] [you/person] had [an 'other injury']?" In 2004 forward, the question wording changed slightly, with interviewers asking, "How long [have you/has person] had the other injury that caused [your/his/her] limitation?" In both time periods, respondents could answer the question using the time unit of their choice (i.e., days, weeks, months, or years). The original responses to these questions are reported in two complementary variables, CLIMOTHINJTP (which specifies the time unit) and CLIMOTHINJNO (which, as noted above, reports the number of such units). As noted in the Codebooks for 1997 forward, "years are topcoded at 85." For the NHIS public use files, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) recoded the results from these two variables to create two other variables using standard time units: years (CLIMOTHINJY) and groups of months (CLIMOTHINJMO).
