For sample persons under age 18 who took tranquilizers or sedatives in the past 2 weeks (MTRAN2W), MTRAN2WDREC reports if a doctor recommended the person take or use the medication. Those who answered "yes" to MTRAN2WRX have been recoded to 3 "Doctor prescribed" in MTRAN2WDREC. MTRAN2WDREC is part of the "Medicine Use" section of the 1981 Child Health Supplement.

For those who respond "yes" to MTRAN2W, the following information is also collected:
- The main health problem the respondent used the tranquilizer or sedative for (MTRAN2WPROB),
- Whether the respondent obtained the tranquilizer or sedative via prescription (MTRAN2WRX), and
- How often the respondent used the tranquilizer or sedative in the past 3 months (MTRAN2WFREQ)
