Description
For sample children aged 4 to 17 who had at least minor difficulties with emotions, concentration, behavior or being able to get along with others in the past 6 months (EMODIFF), DIFTOTH indicates whether, in the past 6 months, the child received treatment or counseling for these difficulties at any other place.
Related Variables
Respondents were asked if the child received treatment or counseling for these difficulties in certain places. These places serve as a reference point by which to interpret "any other place". The places where the child may have received treatment include:
- At daycare, child care, or play group (DIFTDC)
- An office, clinic, or center in the community
- (DIFTOF)
- A hospital emergency room, crisis center, or emergency shelter (DIFTER)
- At home (DIFTHOM)
- A day treatment program in a hospital or in the community (DIFTHOS)
For children with an affirmative response for DIFTOTH, interviewers asked who provided the treatment or counseling.
Possible responses were:
- School counselor, school nurse, or school social worker (DIFTOTHCOUN)
- Speech, occupational, or physical therapist (DIFTOTHTHER)
- Psychiatrist, psychologist, clinical social worker, psychiatric nurse (DIFTOTHMHPROF)
- Pediatrician or family doctor
- (DIFTOTHFAMD)
- Acupuncturist, massage therapist, chiropractor (DIFTOTHCAM)
- Religious or spiritual counselor or advisor
- (DIFTOTHRELIG)
- Probation or juvenile corrections officer or court counselor (DIFTOTHCOURT)
- Other source
- (DIFTOTHOTHER)
Beginning in 2011, the school counselor, school nurse, or school social worker (DIFTOTHCOUN) and the acupuncturist, massage therapist, or chiropractor (DIFTOTHCAM) were no longer offered as response categories.
Information was also collected about treatment or counseling in other locations.
These other locations included:
- A special needs school
- (DIFTSPSCH)
- Regular school
- (DIFTSCHPROG)
- Daycare, child care, or play group
- (DIFTDC)
- Office, clinic or center in community
- (DIFTOF)
- Home
- (DIFTHOM)
- Hospital emergency room, crisis center, or emergency shelter
- (DIFTER)
- Hospital or community day treatment program
- (DIFTHOS)
For each of these locations, interviewers asked who provided the treatment or counseling. The possible responses varied across locations.
Comparability
Beginning in 2011, the interviewer asked about places other than school where the child was receiving treatment or counseling for these difficulties. Correspondingly, providers from a school, such as a school counselor, school nurse, or school social worker (DIFTOTHCOUN) were not included. Otherwise, there are no comparability issues.
