Description

For sample adults 18 and over who reported having a voice problem in the past 12 months (VSLVYR), VSLVDAYS reports the number of days the respondent had a voice problem in the past year.

This variable is part of the Adult Voice, Speech, and Language Supplement, first included in the NHIS survey in 2012. The interviewer prefaced the supplement with the normative statement, "These next questions are about problems with your voice, swallowing, speech, or language. Please do not tell us about problems that resulted from drinking alcohol or were caused by use of illicit drugs."

The Adult Voice, Speech, and Language Supplement is the first-ever large scale communication supplement included in the NHIS survey. It includes data about causes, age of onset, severity, and healthcare utilization in relation to voice, speech, and language problems or difficulties.

Related Variables

In subsequent questions, respondents who had had a voice, swallowing, speech, or language problem in the past 12 months were asked about the duration and extent of the problem.

For voice problems:

For speech problems:

  • VSLSTUTTindicates if the respondent had a stammering or stuttering problem in the past 12 months
  • VSLSTDEGindicates the degree of the stammering or stuttering problem
  • VSLSPPROBindicates how much of a problem the respondent had with speech in the past 12 months
  • VSLSPCOMP indicates if the respondent's speech problems are better or worse compared to 12 months ago

For language problems: 

  • VSLLGDAYSindicates the number of days the respondent had a problem using or understanding words or sentences in the past year
  • VSLLGWKindicates the problem using or understanding words or sentences lasted one week or longer
  • VSLLGAGEindicates the age at which the respondent first had problems using or understanding words or sentences
