For sample adults ages 18 and older (2012) and all sample persons 3 and older (starting in 2022), VSLVYR reports if the person had any problems or difficulties with her or his voice in the past year, such as hoarse, raspy, or strained voice, or difficulty speaking loud enough to be heard.

VSLVYR is part of the Adult Voice, Speech and Language Supplement. For related variables and more information, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus, or see VSLDIAG, which reports on diagnosis, VSLVDAYS, which reports on the problem duration and extent, and VSLVSLPYR, which reports on treatment.

Starting in 2022, the sample child version of this variable, CVVCDIF, was combined into a single variable, VSLVYR.

Also starting in 2022, this variable is now a part of the Voice, Swallowing, Speech, and Language Communication Disorders section of sponsored content in the NHIS survey. Please see VSLDIAG for more information on this section.

For more voice, swallowing, speech, and language communication disorder variables, please see VSLDIAG.

Major questionnaire changes introduced in 2019 may affect comparability with earlier years. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
