For sample adults in 2007 who had taken vitamins or minerals during the past 30 days (VITMO), VITPTP reports how often the respondent bought vitamins or minerals.
Interviewers asked, "About how often do you buy vitamins or minerals?" Interviewers were instructed, "If necessary prompt with: how many times per day, per week, per month or per year do you buy herbal supplements? Enter '0' if respondent does not buy vitamins or minerals."
VITPTP reports a time period (e.g., per day, per week, per month, etc.). It must be interpreted in conjunction with VITPNO, which reports the number of times respondents had purchased vitamins or minerals corresponding to the time period reported in VITPTP.
See VITPAMT for the dollar amount spent on vitamins and minerals by the respondent during the last purchase of these materials.
For some other alternative health practices, information was also collected on the purchase of related materials, specifically:
- Bought relaxation technique self-help book or materials (RELBOOK)
- 2007: Sample adults age 18+ who have taken vitamins or minerals during the past 30 days.
- 2012: Sample adults age 18+ who have taken vitamins or minerals in the last year and gave a number of how many times vitamins and minerals were purchased, and sample children ages 4-17 who have taken vitamins or minerals during the past 12 months.
