Description

For sample adults in 2005 who had taken vitamin or mineral supplements of any kind during the past 12 months (VITANY), VITABETA indicates whether respondents took beta carotene during this period. VITABETA is one of a series of variables indicating whether respondents took a specific vitamin or mineral supplement during the past 12 months.

In 2005, interviewers began the questions on vitamins by saying, "The next questions are about any individual vitamin or mineral supplements you may take." Interviewers then asked direct questions about specific vitamin or mineral supplements (such as, "During the past 12 months, did you take any beta carotene?") The survey form directed interviewers to instruct respondents, "if necessary," "Do not include any beta carotene included in the multi-vitamins you told me about."

Related Variables

Beta carotene is one of 12 vitamin/mineral supplements recognized by the NHIS in various years that respondents could report using during the past 12 months.

The other such vitamin and mineral supplements, along with the years their associated variables are available, are:

  • Calcium (VITACALC, 1992, 2000, 2002, 2005)
  • Vitamin A (only) (VITAMINA, 1992, 2000)
  • Vitamin C (VITAMINC, 1992, 2000, 2002)
  • Vitamin E (VITAMINE, 1992, 2000, 2002, 2005)
  • Multi-vitamin (VITAMULTV, 1992, 2000, 2002, 2005)

Information was also collected on how long respondents had taken beta carotene.
Respondents who gave an affirmative response to the question associated with VITABETA were asked to report the number of months they had taken beta carotene supplements (VITABETAMO). Respondents who had taken beta carotene during at least one month in the past 12 months were asked how often they took beta carotene in those months (VITABETANO), responding as desired in terms of days per week or days per month (VITABETATP).

For more on the full range of variables related to vitamins, see VITANY. For a description of how information was collected for the above-mentioned variables in years other than 2005, see VITACALC.
