Codes and Frequencies
Description
ULCERSTOMYRC indicates whether the person had a chronic stomach ulcer in the past year. This variable is created with supplemental programming by the IPUMS NHIS staff from the pre-1997 condition records. For general information about IHIS variables (such as ULCERSTOMYRC) created from the pre-1997 condition records, see the User Note on Condition Records and Condition Variables.
Defining Stomach Ulcer Records and Identifying Persons with a Stomach Ulcer
For all available years, persons who were asked a direct question about having a stomach ulcer and who have a chronic stomach ulcer condition record are given a "Yes" code for ULCERSTOMYRC. Persons who were asked a direct question about a stomach ulcer but do not have a chronic stomach ulcer record are given a code of "No." Persons who were not asked a direct question about a stomach ulcer, or for whom it is unknown whether they were asked such a question, are given a code of "NIU" (not in universe), regardless of whether they have a chronic stomach ulcer record.
1975 and 1978
For 1975 and 1978, stomach ulcer records were defined as those condition records with a code of "28" ("Ulcer of the stomach and duodenum") in the variable DIAGR3 in the original NHIS public use files. This condition code value comes from NCHS's Diagnostic Recode 3: Chronic Diseases and Impairments.
1979 to 1981
For 1979-1981, stomach ulcer records were defined as those condition records with any of the following codes in the variable DCICDCOD in the original NHIS public use files:
- "5310" ("Gastric ulcer, acute with hemorrhage")
- "5311" ("Gastric ulcer, acute with perforation")
- "5312" ("Gastric ulcer, acute with hemorrhage and perforation")
- "5313" ("Gastric ulcer, acute without mention of hemorrhage or perforation")
- "5314" ("Gastric ulcer, chronic or unspecified with hemorrhage")
- "5315" ("Gastric ulcer, chronic or unspecified with perforation")
- "5316" ("Gastric ulcer, chronic or unspecified with hemorrhage and perforation")
- "5317" ("Gastric ulcer, chronic without mention of hemorrhage or perforation")
- "5319" ("Gastric ulcer, unspecified as acute or chronic, without mention of hemorrhage or perforation")
- "5320" ("Duodenal ulcer, acute with hemorrhage")
- "5321" ("Duodenal ulcer, acute with perforation")
- "5322" ("Duodenal ulcer, acute with hemorrhage and perforation")
- "5323" ("Duodenal ulcer, acute without mention of hemorrhage or perforation")
- "5324" ("Duodenal ulcer, chronic or unspecified with hemorrhage")
- "5325" ("Duodenal ulcer, chronic or unspecified with perforation")
- "5326" ("Duodenal ulcer, chronic or unspecified with hemorrhage and perforation")
- "5327" ("Duodenal ulcer, chronic without mention of hemorrhage or perforation")
- "5329" ("Duodenal ulcer, unspecified as acute or chronic, without mention of hemorrhage or perforation")
- "5330" ("Peptic ulcer, acute with hemorrhage")
- "5331" ("Peptic ulcer, acute with perforation")
- "5332" ("Peptic ulcer, acute with hemorrhage and perforation")
- "5333" ("Peptic ulcer, acute without mention of hemorrhage or perforation")
- "5334" ("Peptic ulcer, chronic or unspecified with hemorrhage")
- "5335" ("Peptic ulcer, chronic or unspecified with perforation")
- "5336" ("Peptic ulcer, chronic or unspecified with hemorrhage and perforation")
- "5337" ("Peptic ulcer, chronic without mention of hemorrhage or perforation")
- "5339" ("Peptic ulcer, unspecified as acute or chronic, without mention of hemorrhage or perforation")
These condition code values come from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) Revision 9. Additionally, to be considered "chronic," stomach ulcer condition records must have a code of "1" ("Chronic") in the variable CACODE in the original NHIS public use files.
1982 to 1996
For 1982 to 1996, chronic stomach ulcer records were defined as those condition records with a code of "303" ("Gastric ulcer"), "304" ("Duodenal ulcer"), or "305" ("Peptic ulcer") in the variable C1CONDRC in the original NHIS public use files. These condition code values come from NCHS's Diagnostic Recode C: Chronic Conditions and Impairments.
Weights
For 1975, ULCERSTOMYRC should be weighted with PERWEIGHT.
For 1978 to 1981, ULCERSTOMYRC should be weighted with CONDWT1.
For 1982 to 1996, ULCERSTOMYRC should be weighted with CONDWT3.
Related Stomach Ulcer Variables
The nearest equivalent of ULCERSTOMYRC for 1997 forward is ULCERYR (Had an ulcer, past 12 months). However, researchers should use caution when comparing prevalence estimates derived from these two variables, as the manner of collecting information about ulcers differs greatly between the two. ULCERSTOMYRC was created by recoding condition records that were generated in response to several different survey questions about health problems underlying disability, sick days, or contacts with health care practitioners. ULCERYR, by contrast, is based on a direct question about whether the person had an ulcer.
Comparability
As with all of the person-level condition variables created by IHIS from condition records prior to 1997, the universe for ULCERSTOMYRC is substantially different for 1978 forward than it is for years prior to 1978. Beginning in 1978, only persons living in 1/6 of households, rather than all persons, were asked a direct question about having stomach ulcer in the past year. There is also a minor universe change between the sets of years 1978-1981 and 1982-1996. These changes require that different weight variables be used depending on which years of data are analyzed. See the "Description" tab for details.
Additionally, there is a change in the way "Yes" responses are coded over time. See the User Note on Condition Records and Condition Variables for details about the composite coding scheme employed by IHIS.
