Description

For persons who have not lost all of their teeth and who use toothpaste, TPASTECALC records whether the brand of toothpaste the person used most often in the past two weeks is marketed for slowing calculus buildup.

Persons who reported using toothpaste to brush their teeth (see TBRUSHPROD) were asked to name the brand of toothpaste that they used. The brands were subsequently coded based on their marketing and whether they met American Dental Association (ADA) standards for preventing calculus build-up.

Toothpastes were also classified based on their marketing to prevent decay (fluoride) (TPASTEDECAY), to reduce plaque (TPASTEPLAQ), to desensitize teeth (TPASTEDESEN), or to whiten teeth or remove smoking stains (TPASTEWHITE).

TPASTECALC is part of the Dental Health Supplement. For related variables and more information about this supplement, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.
