For persons who have not lost all of their teeth and who use toothpaste, TPASTEDECAY records whether the brand of toothpaste the person used most often in the past two weeks is marketed for preventing decay (fluoride toothpastes).

Persons who reported using toothpaste to brush their teeth were asked to name the brand of toothpaste that they used. The brands were subsequently coded based on their marketing and whether they met American Dental Association (ADA) or FDA standards for effectiveness at preventing decay for fluoride toothpastes.

TPASTEDECAY is part of the Dental Health Supplement. For related variables and more information about this supplement, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.
