Description
For sample adults who responded, "Yes" to the question, "Have you ever heard of tuberculosis?" (TBHEARD) and who reported knowing "a lot," "some," or "a little" about tuberculosis (TB) (TBKNOW), TBDISHES indicates whether the respondent believed that tuberculosis can be spread by sharing eating and or drinking utensils.
Data Collection Methods
Interviewers asked, "How is TB spread?" They handed respondents a card that listed 5 specific choices (such as "sharing eating/drinking utensils") plus "other." From 2001 forward, the card included the statement,"You may choose more than one." The survey form directed interviewers to "mark all that apply" and to probe for additional responses by asking, "Can TB be spread in any other way?"
Five other dichotomous variables, covering the remaining possible responses included on the flashcard, report whether respondents believed in other specific modes of TB transmission.
