PSALEST

Time since most recent PSA test: Rough estimate

Description

For male sample adults aged 40 years or older who ever had a PSA test (PSAEV), PSALEST reports the estimated number of years since the respondent's last PSA test in grouped year intervals. Prior to 2010, this question was asked of male sample adults aged 40 years or greater who ever had a PSA test (PSAEV) and who either did not know or refused to give the date of their last PSA test. In 2010 and 2015, this question was asked of male sample adults aged 40 years or greater who ever had a PSA test (PSAEV) and who either did not know or refused to give the date of their last PSA test or who selected years ago for the time period format.

In 1999, the survey form directed interviewers to show the respondents a flashcard listing the response categories when asking this question. On the flashcard was written:

1. A year ago or less

2. More than 1 year, but not more than 2 years

3. More than 2 years, but not more than 3 years

4. More than 3 years, but not more than 5 years

5. Over 5 years ago

A version of this flashcard in which the commas are removed was used in subsequent surveys until 2010, when no flashcard was used. In every year except 1999, the survey form directed interviewers to read the categories.
