Description

For sample persons, PHYSACTIVE reports the respondent's assessment of his or her physical activity compared with other persons of the same age. Please see the Comparability and Universe tabs for detailed information on changes of universe between samples.

Comparability

Changes in universe affect comparability between samples. In 1975, the question was asked of sample persons ages 19 and over. In 1977 the question for PHYSACTIVE was asked for a sub-sample of randomly selected persons age 20 and over; NHIS automatically classifies persons who were selected but did not complete the questions as responding "unknown " for this variable. Users may choose to use this variable in combination with SUBSRESP77, which reports the person's sub-sample status in 1977. In 1984 the question was asked of sample persons ages 55 and over who did not use a proxy respondent. For the 1983, 1985, and 1990 samples the question was asked of sample persons ages 18 and over.

Universe

  • 1975: Sample persons age 19+.
  • 1977: Subsampled persons age 20+.
  • 1983; 1985; 1990: Sample persons age 18+.
  • 1984: Sample persons age 55+ who did not use a proxy respondent.
