Description

For female sample adults aged 18 and over, PAPDR1YR reports whether, in the past year, a doctor or other healthcare professional recommended that the respondent have a Pap smear. Please see Comparability and Universe tabs for changes in universe between samples.

Comparability

Changes in universe may limit comparability between samples. Relevant variables for making the universes comparable are included below; data users may choose to drop certain cases to improve comparability.

In 2000, this question was only asked of female sample adults who reported never having had a Pap smear (PAPEV), or not having one in the past three years (PAPLEST), and did not report that a doctor didn't recommend one, that they had a hysterectomy, or that they do not have a doctor when asked why they have not had a Pap smear in the past 3 years (PAPYNOEV3YR).

Beginning in 2005, this question was asked of all female sample adults who responded whether they had ever had a Pap smear test (PAPEV). In 2005 and 2010 women who reported that a doctor didn't recommend one, that they had a hysterectomy, or that they do not have a doctor when asked why they have not had a Pap smear in the past 3 years (PAPYNOEV3YR) were also excluded from the universe. In 2008, only women reporting that a doctor didn't recommend one or that they do not have a doctor were excluded from the universe.

For the 2013 sample, the question was asked of all female sample adults who did not refuse or not know whether they had ever had a Pap smear test (PAPEV).

The universe for 2015 sample is female sample adults 18+ who had a doctor, who didn't answer that her doctor didn't recommend a Pap test, who haven't had a hysterectomy, and gave a reason for not having Pap test ever/in the last 5 years.
