Codes and Frequencies
Description
For female sample persons ages 18 and over who have never had a Pap smear, or who have had a Pap smear but not in the past 3 years (or 5 years in 2015 only), PAPYNOEV3YR reports the most important reason why she has never/not had a Pap smear in the past few years.
Please refer to PAPEV for more information on variables covering Pap smear receipt.
Comparability
For 2010 and earlier, apart from changes in the universe and in the response categories, there are no comparability issues. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the information was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. In 2015 only, the period of time without a pap smear was extended from 3 years to 5 years, so that the universe becomes female sample person ages 18 and over who have never had a Pap smear, or who have had a Pap smear but not in the past 5 years. In 2018, the period of time without a pap smear reverted to the past 3 years. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
