Description

NOTNURSHOME indicates whether the person needed but did not get nursing home care during the past 12 months. NOTNURSHOME reports responses to the question, "During the past 12 months, was there a time when [person] needed any kind of the following services, but did not get them ... nursing home care?" The question was intended to determine whether access to this specific type of health care was restricted at any time during the previous year, for any reason.

Definition of Nursing Home Care 

The Field Representative's Manual for 2001 contains the following detailed definition of nursing home care:

Nursing home care provides 24-hour medical and social services to the frail elderly and chronically-disabled populations. Nursing care facilities, or nursing homes, provide care for individuals who need nursing care on a regular basis but do not need to be hospitalized. The care is administered by nursing professionals under the direction of a physician. The facilities are regulated by state and local boards of health. Many nursing care facilities offer short-term or respite care for rehabilitation and other short-term needs.
