For sample persons under age 18 who took pain relievers in the past 2 weeks (MPAIN2W), MPAIN2WDREC reports if a doctor recommended the person take or use the medication. Those who answered "yes " to MPAIN2WRX have been recoded to 3 "Doctor prescribed" in MPAIN2WDREC. MPAIN2WDREC is part of the "Medicine Use" section of the 1981 Child Health Supplement.

For those who respond "yes" to MPAIN2W, the following information is also collected:
- The main health problem the respondent used the pain medicine for (MPAIN2WPROB),
- Whether the respondent obtained the pain medicine via prescription (MPAIN2WRX), and
- How often the respondent used the pain medicine in the past 3 months (MPAIN2WFREQ)
