For sample persons under age 18, MENINGITEV indicates if the child ever had meningitis or spinal meningitis. The inquiry did not require that the meningitis be diagnosed by a doctor or health professional, and a definition of " meningitis" or "spinal meningitis" was not provided in the survey text or in the Field Representative's Manual .
