For sample persons under age 18 who took cough medicines in the past 2 weeks (MCOF2W), MCOF2WDREC reports if a doctor recommended the person to take or use the medication. Those who answered "yes " to MCOF2WRX have been recoded to 3 "Doctor prescribed" in MCOF2WDREC. MCOF2WDREC is part of the "Medicine Use" section of the 1981 Child Health Supplement.

For those who respond "yes" to MCOF2W, the following information is also collected:
- The main health problem the respondent used the cough medicine for (MCOF2WPROB),
- Whether the respondent obtained the cough medicine via prescription (MCOF2WRX), and
- How often the respondent used the cough medicine in the past 3 months (MCOF2WFREQ)
