For sample adults who were ever told that they had high blood pressure (except only during pregnancy) (HYPERTENEV and HYPPREG), HYPALCADV indicates whether they had ever been advised by a doctor or other health professional to cut down on alcohol use, because of high blood pressure.
Those who gave an affirmative response to HYPALCADV were further asked whether they had ever followed such advice to reduce alcohol consumption to lower their blood pressure (HYPALCFOL) and whether they were now following such advice (HYPALCNOW).
According to the 2003 Field Representative's Manual, these questions were part of a supplement on heart disease and stroke sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute. This supplement was "meant to assess whether a person has received advice from his or her doctor as to how to control high blood pressure, whether the person is currently following that advice, and whether that person has ever followed that advice."
Additional questions included in this supplement address receiving and following advice to make other behavioral changes to lower blood pressure, specifically:
- 1990: Sample persons age 18+ who were ever told they had high blood pressure not related to pregnancy.
- 1998: Male sample adults age 18+ who were ever told they had high blood pressure and agreed to answer questions in the Adult Prevention Module, and female sample adults who were ever told they had high blood pressure, agreed to answer questions in the Adult Prevention Module, and indicated that they were not told they had high blood pressure only during pregnancy or had an unknown response for whether they had high blood pressure only during pregnancy.
- 2003; 2008: Sample adults age 18+ who were ever told they had high blood pressure not related to pregnancy or for whom it was unknown whether their high blood pressure was pregnancy-related.
