Description

DRMWKDETIND reports the sample person's detailed industry classification of their past job related to their skin condition. This inquiry was directed at sample adults age 18 years and over who are currently employed (EMPSTATSA) or employed at some time in the past 12 months (EMPSTATWKYR) who reported having dermatitis, eczema, or any other red, inflamed skin rash in the past 12 months (DRMYR) who have been told by a doctor or other health professional that their skin condition was probably work related (DRMWKRETOLD) and whose current job or job in the past 12 months and their longest-held job, if different from their current job or job in the past 12 months was not their longest-held job (MAINLONG) and was not the cause of their skin condition (DRMWKCURJOB, DRMWKLNGJOB).

DRMWKDETIND is a recode of a series of verbatim responses reporting "whom they worked for", in "what kind of business or industry", "what kind of work", and "what were their most important activities" at the job when they developed their skin condition. The other variables based on these verbatim responses were:

  • (DRMWKSIMIND) Simple industry classification at past job related to skin condition
  • (DRMWKDETOCC) Detailed occupational classification at past job related to skin condition
  • (DRMWKSIMOCC) Simple occupational classification at past job related to skin condition

The survey description for 2010 reported that "During the course of the interview, verbatim responses were obtained from each eligible respondent regarding his/her industry and occupation. This information was subsequently reviewed by U.S. Census Bureau coding specialists, who assigned appropriate industry and occupation codes." It goes onto say "Users should consult the Occupation and Industry Appendices at the end of the Sample Adult variable layout file for the response categories and labels... Links to the complete lists of NAICS Industry Subsectors and Sectors and the SOC Occupation Subgroups and Major Groups are embedded within these appendices, and provide the classification framework for the NHIS public use recodes."
