Description

For sample adult women who ever had a cervical cancer test (CRVTSTEV), CRVTSTHPV indicates whether they had an HPV (Human Papillomavirus) test at their most recent cervical cancer screening. According to the 2021 Field Representative's Manual, HPV "is a type of virus that can cause abnormal tissue growth (for example, warts) and other changes to cells. Infection for a long time with certain types of human papillomavirus can cause cervical cancer."

In a related but distinct variable offered in the 2015 and 2018 NHIS, HPVPAP indicates whether sample adult women age 18 and older received an HPV test with their last Pap test.

CRVTSTHPV is fielded every other year (beginning in 2019) as part of a broader set of rotating core NHIS content covering preventive screening. For more information on other variables related to cervical cancer screening tests, please see the CRVTSTEV) description.
