Description
CIGAREV indicates whether persons aged 18 and older have ever smoked a cigar, even one time (beginning in 2005); this includes small, thin, cigars wrapped in tobacco leaf rather than paper called 'cigarillos,' and are made by machine or hand rolled.
[show more]Except for the 2000 sample, the term "cigar" was person defined. The Field Representative's Manual for 1987 mentions that interviewers should, "Include "cigarillos" as cigars, if asked." No further definition is provided in the 1992 Manual.
The 2015 Field Representative's Manual defines "Cigars [as] the little cigars called 'cigarillos' in English, along with little filtered cigars. In Spanish, 'cigars' are called 'puro regular,' 'cigarillos' are called 'un puro tipo cigarrito,' and 'little filtered cigars' are called 'puro pequeños filtrados.' Do NOT include 'cigarrillos' as cigars when conducting a Spanish interview because 'cigarrillos' means 'cigarettes' in Spanish."
Other related variables include whether the person now uses, formerly used or has never smoked cigars (CIGARSTATUS), ever smoked it at least 50 times in their entire life (CIGAR50LIFE), and if they used it at the time of the survey (CIGARNOW).

In addition to changes in question wording in beginning in 2000, analysts should refer to the universe tab for minor changes in the universe across years.
