Description
For sample adults age 18, this is a recoded variable indicating if the respondent now uses, formerly used or never smoked cigars.
[show more]The term "cigar" was respondent defined. The Field Representative's Manual for 1987 mentions that interviewers should, "Include "cigarillos" as cigars, if asked." No further definition is provided in the 1992 Manual.
The recoded response is provided from answers to questions on if the respondent ever smoked cigars (CIGAREV), ever smoked it at least 50 times in their entire life (CIGAR50LIFE), and if they used it at the time of the survey (CIGARNOW).
