Description

CIGAR50LIFE indicates whether respondents have smoked at least 50 cigars in their entire life.

 

The term "cigar" was respondent defined. The Field Representative's Manual for 1987 mentions that interviewers should, "Include "cigarillos" as cigars, if asked." No further definition is provided in the 1992 Manual.

The 2015 Field Representative's Manual defines "Cigars include the little cigars called 'cigarillos' in English, along with little filtered cigars. In Spanish, 'cigars' are called 'puro regular', 'cigarillos' are called 'un puro tipo cigarrito', and 'little filtered cigars' are called 'puro pequeños filtrados'. Do NOT include 'cigarrillos' as cigars when conducting a Spanish interview because 'cigarrillos' means 'cigarettes' in Spanish."

Related Variables

Other related variables include whether the respondent ever smoked cigars (CIGAREV), now use, formerly used or have never smoked cigars (CIGARSTATUS), and if they used it at the time of the survey (CIGARNOW).

  • 1970: Persons age 17+.
  • 1987; 1991: Sample persons age 18+ who have ever smoked a cigar.
  • 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ in quarters 1 and 2, and in 2 weeks of quarter 3 (excluded from CAEP supplement) who have ever smoked a cigar.
  • 1998; 2000; 2005; 2010: Sample adults age 18+ who have ever smoked a cigar.
  • 2015: Sample adults who have ever smoked a regular cigar, cigarillo, or filtered cigar
