Description
For sample adults age 18 and over, CAREHOSP reports if the person received care or services at a hospital, as an inpatient, in the past 12 months.
CAREHOSP was first introduced as part of the 1988 and 1989 AIDS knowledge and attitudes supplement. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.
Comparability
Apart from changes in the survey quarters sampled for this question, there are no comparability issues. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. Data users are reminded to use the prescribed IHIS weights in their analyses.
Universe
- 1988: Sample persons age 18+ in quarters 2 through 4.
- 1989: Sample persons age 18+.
