Description

For sample persons aged 18 and over, CAREER reports if the person received care or services at a hospital emergency room in the past 12 months.

CAREER was first introduced as part of the 1988 and 1989 AIDS knowledge and attitudes supplement. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.

Comparability

There are no comparability issues. Changes in survey design (e.g. quarters or subsamples) affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, users should use appropriate weight in their analyses.

Universe

  • 1988: Sample persons age 18+ in quarters 2 through 4.
  • 1989: Sample persons age 18+.
