Description

CANPLASURG indicates if the sample person mentioned seeing a plastic or reconstructive surgeon for their cancer diagnosis and treatment. This inquiry was directed at sample persons age 18 years and over who were ever diagnosed with one kind of cancer (CANCEREV, CANCERNO) and were diagnosed in the past 10 years (CAN1DIAGDY, CAN1DIAGE) or who were diagnosed with more than one kind of cancer (CANCERNO) and most recent cancer was diagnosed in the past 10 years (CANRECDIAGDY, CANRECDIAGE).

The field representative's manual defined reconstructive surgeon as a surgeon who "performs surgery concerned with the restoration, reconstruction or improvement in the appearance of body structures that are damaged or misshapen by injury, disease (including cancer, or previous surgery". It went on to say "Indicate all the different type of doctors the SP saw for diagnoses and/or treatment of the cancer...Include doctors seen for consultation, second opinions, follow-up treatment etc., as well as those making the initial diagnoses or providing primary treatment".
