Description

For sample adults who have ever seen a health professional, including ER physicians, for symptoms of dizziness or balance problems (BALGOHOSPEV and BALSAWHPEV) and for sample children (beginning in 2012) who have episodes of balance or dizziness problems in the past 12 months, BALHPDIAG reports whether a health professional told the person the cause or gave a diagnosis for the dizziness or balance problem. Please see the Comparability and Universe Tab for information on the universe changed over time.

This variable was part of the Sample Adult and Sample Child Balance Supplements, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

Comparability

In 2008, for sample adults, this variable corresponds to the most bothersome dizziness symptom (BALSBOTHER). In 2012 and 2016, for sample adults, the question refers more generally to whether the action usually happens around the same time as dizziness or balance problem(s).

Please see the Universe tab for information on how the universe changes for this variable over time. Otherwise, this variable is largely comparable over time.
