Description
For sample adults and sample children (beginning in 2012) who were ever told by a doctor or other health professional of the cause(s) of their dizziness or balance problem (BALHPDIAG), BALCONCUS indicates whether concussion was one of the causes.
This variable was part of the Sample Adult and Child Balance Supplements, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.
Comparability
Please see the Universe tab for universe changes to this variable over time. For sample adults in 2008, this variable refers to their "most bothersome dizziness or balance problem" (BALSBOTHER); for sample children in all years and sample adults in 2016, this variable refers to more generally to "dizziness or balance problem(s)." Otherwise, this variable is largely comparable over time.
Universe
- 2008: Sample adults age 18+ who were told cause of symptoms of dizziness or balance problem.
- 2012: Sample children 3+ who have ever been told a diagnosis for their balance or dizziness problems
- 2016: Sample adults 18+ who had a balance or dizziness problem in the past 12 months and have had a balance or dizziness problem in the past 12 months or who had at least one symptom in the past 12 months AND who were told a reason for their dizziness or balance problem by a doctor or other health professional (including ER); and sample children 3+ who have ever been told a diagnosis for their balance or dizziness problems.
