Description

ALCLIFE indicates whether sample adults had at least twelve drinks of any type of alcoholic beverage in their entire lives. Before posing this question, interviewers stated, "These next questions are about drinking alcoholic beverages. Included are liquor such as whiskey or gin, beer, wine, wine coolers, and any other type of alcoholic beverage."

ALCLIFE, like ALC1YR, functioned largely as a filter for further questioning about alcoholic consumption during the past year. If sample adults did not acknowledge having had 12+ drinks in any one year (ALC1YR), they were asked, "In your entire life, have you had at least 12 drinks of any type of alcoholic beverage?" If they gave a positive response to this question, they were asked about the frequency and amount of their drinking in the previous twelve months (ALCAMT).
