Description

AIDCHANCE reports the sample person's chance of getting the AIDS virus. In 1987, this inquiry was directed at sample persons age 18 years and older in quarter 3 (5th week) and quarter 4 who reported when saw/heard/read something about AIDS (AIDHEARTP, AIDHEARNO, AIDHEARD, AIDHEARW), or who ever heard of AIDS (AIDHEAREV). In 1989-1991, this question was asked of sample persons age 18 years and older whose chances of having the AIDS virus is NOT high, or REF/NA/DK what chances are (AIDCHANCENOW), in 1988, it was asked of same group in quarters 2, 3, and 4 (AIDCHANCENOW), and in 1991 it was asked of the only half of the same group (AIDCHANCENOW). In 1994-1995, the inquiry was directed at half of sample persons age 18 years and older (excluded front he Y2K supplement), and in 1993 it was asked of the same group only in quarters 3 and 4. In 1997-2010, the question was asked of sample adults age 18 years and older.

Data Collection Methods

For all years interviewers asked "what are your chances of getting HIV, (the viruses that causes AIDS)? Would you say high, medium, low, or none?"

 

In 1988-1992 the question was asked only of sample persons whose chances of having AIDS was not high or they were not sure of their chances.

Comparability

Aside from changes in the universe, there are no comparability problems with AIDCHANCE.

Universe

  • 1987: Sample persons age 18+ in Q3 (5th week) and Q4 who reported when saw/heard/read something about AIDS or who ever heard of AIDS.
  • 1988: Sample persons age 18+ in Q2, 3 and 4 whose chances of having the AIDS virus is NOT high, or REF/NA/DK what chances are.
  • 1989-1991: Sample persons age 18+ whose chances of having the AIDS virus is NOT high, or REF/NA/DK what chances are.
  • 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ whose chances of having the AIDS virus is NOT high, or REF/NA/DK what chances are.
  • 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in Q3 and Q4 (excluded from Y2K supplement)
  • 1994-1995: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from Y2K supplement)
  • 1997-2010: Sample adults age 18+.
