Description

For sample children 12-17, VICBULLY indicates how often they were bullied, picked on, or excluded by other children in the last 12 months. In recognition of the emerging importance of bullying victimization on the health of adolescents, NCHS introduced VICBULLY to the NHIS in 2021 as one of three variables on bullying. The bullying variables introduced on the 2021 NHIS were adapted from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS).

Related Variables

In addition to VICBULLY, two additional questions were asked about bullying in the series introduced in 2021:

• VICCYBULLY: Ever been cyberbullied in last 12 months

• PERPBULLY: How often did individual bully someone in the last 12 months

In addition to the three-variable series introduced in 2021, NHIS includes several other variables on bullying for children and adolescents, including:

• BULLIES: Often fights or bullies kids, past 6 months

• PICKEDON: Was picked on or bullied, past 6 months
