Description

For female sample adults aged 30 and older who ever had a breast MRI (BMRIEV), BMRILY reports the main reason that the respondent had their last breast MRI test.

Data Collection Process

Interviewers asked the open-ended question, "What is the main reason you had this breast MRI?" The interviewer then fit the response into one of the categories included on the survey form (i.e., follow-up of abnormal mammogram, breast problem, health care provider said at high risk, family history of breast cancer, routine exam, personal request, or other).

The 2010 Field Representative's Manual advised that:

For any of the questions that asks, "What is the main reason you had this exam?" ... if the respondent had a problem, but was not sure which reason to pick, then record the first one she gives, as her initial thought is probably the best option.

For a description of the breast MRI test, see BMRIEV.

Comparability

In 2010, a code of 3 indicated the respondent had a breast MRI because their healthcare provider told them they were high risk. Beginning in 2023, this code indicates the respondent is high risk for a variety of possible reasons, including family history, genetic test, or another reason.
The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
