Description

For sample adults 18-64 and sample children 9-17 who have received an HPV vaccine (HPVACHAD), HPV1STAGE indicates the age of their first HPV shot (see also AHPV1STAGE).

In 2010, HPV1STAGE was asked only of female sample children ages 8 to 17 who had received the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine or shot.

Users should note that in 2022, a 1 was recorded if the reported age of the first HPV vaccine was 1 or younger.

This variable was first introduced in the 2010 Cancer Control Supplement. In 2022, it was included in the Immunization section and sponsored by the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD).

Related variables

Questions about the HPV vaccine were also asked in 2008, with the exception of age at first HPV shot (HPV1STAGE). For 2010, all sample children aged 8-17 years were asked about awareness of the HPV vaccine (HPVACHEAR), whether the sample child received the vaccine (HPVACHAD) and the number of shots received (HPVACNO) whereas in 2008, these were only asked for female sample children aged 8-17.

Please use the IPUMS NHIS drop down menu and search functions for other related variables.

Comparability

In 2022, HPV1STAGE was asked of sample adults ages 18-64 and sample children ages 9-17. In 2010, HPV1STAGE was asked only of female sample children ages 8 to 17. Users should be cautious when making comparisons across time and should limit their comparison to respondents who meet the "in universe" criteria for all available samples (e.g., females ages 8-17). Please see AHPV1STAGE for age of first HPV shot for adults.

The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
