Description
For sample children in 2007 who had taken vitamin or mineral supplements in the past 30 days (VITMO), VITSP indicates whether the child had taken any vitamins or minerals to improve athletic or sports performance.
Related Variables
Respondents for sample children were shown a flash card containing a list of vitamin and mineral supplements and were asked to report if the child had taken any of these supplements for improved athletic or sports performance.
The supplements included are:
- Calcium (VITSPCALC)
- Coral calcium (VITSPCCALC)
- Chromium (VITSPCHRO)
- Multi-vitamin and/or mineral combination (VITSPCOMBO)
- Folic acid/folate (VITSPFOLIC)
- Iron (VITSPIRON)
- Magnesium (VITSPMAG)
- Niacin (VITSPNIA)
- Vitamin packet (VITSPPACK)
- Potassium (VITSPPOTA)
- Selenium (VITSPSELN)
- Vitamin A (VITSPVITA)
- Vitamin B6 (VITSPVITB6)
- Vitamin B12 (VITSPVITB12)
- Vitamin B complex (VITSPVITB)
- Vitamin C (VITSPVITC)

In 2007, sample adults could also report that they had taken a vitamin or mineral supplement to improve sports performance (VIT1SPORT and VIT2SPORT). Unlike sample children, however, sample adults were not asked to report which vitamins or minerals they had taken for this purpose.
The 2007 NHIS also collected information on sample persons' use of herbal supplements to improve athletic or sports performance.
