Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample adults who consumed cooked cereals, like oatmeal, in the past year, OATMSIZ reports the portion size eaten each time the respondent consumed cooked cereals, like oatmeal. A medium portion was defined as one medium bowl. In 1987 and 1992 sample persons were asked about the frequency and portion sizes of different types of cereal they consumed in the past year. To improve comparability, the frequency responses were recoded into a single variable that reports how many times the respondent consumes any type of cereal, per year (CEREALYR). For the type of cereal most consumed, see CEREALTYPE. OATMSIZ corresponds only to the portion size of cooked cereals consumed, not other cereal types.
OATMSIZ is part of a series of variables initiated in 1987 related to food, food knowledge, and cancer. For related variables, please use the IPUMS NHIS search function and drop-down menus.
