Description
BALSLIGHT indicates whether the person felt lightheaded, without a sense of motion, in the last 12 months. This variable refers to symptoms of dizziness or balance problems. Please see the Universe and Comparability tabs for information on how this variable changes over time.
The question for this variable was part of the Sample Adult Balance Supplement, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.
Comparability
In 2008, this variable includes responses from sample adults who have experienced at least one specific dizziness or balance related problem in the past 12 months (BALPROBNO). However, beginning in 2016, this variable includes responses from sample adults 18 and older who have ever had a problem with dizziness or balance and sample adults who have had a dizziness or balance problem in the past 12 months (BALDIZYR) or sample adults who have ever reported having a problem of at least one specific dizziness or balance problem in the past 12 months (BALPROBNO).
Universe
- 2008: Sample adults age 18+ who experienced at least one specific dizziness or balance-related problem in the past 12 months.
- 2016: Sample adults 18+ who have ever had a problem with dizziness or balance and sample adults who have had a dizziness or balance problem in the past 12 months OR sample adults who have ever reported having a problem of at least one specific dizziness or balance problem in the past 12 months.
