Description
For sample persons ages 18 and older who have been tested for HIV, AIDTYRNO reports the number of HIV tests the person has had in the past 12 months. Please see the Comparability tab for a discussion of changes in universe and categories across samples.
Comparability
Changes in the universe over time affect the comparability of this variable. In 1988-1989, AIDTYRNO is restricted only to sample persons 18 and older who have been tested more than once. From 1990 until 1995 the universe expands to include sample persons 18 and older who have ever been tested for HIV. In 2002 this only includes sample adults who have been tested in the past 12 months.
In 1988-1990, responses were top coded at 12 tests; this top code was removed in subsequent years.
Changes in survey design (e.g. quarters or subsamples) affect raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.

- 1988: Sample persons age 18+ in Q2, 3 and 4 who have ever heard of a blood test for HIV and have ever been tested and have been tested more than once for HIV.
- 1989: Sample persons age 18+ who have ever heard of a blood test for HIV and have ever been tested and have been tested more than once for HIV.
- 1990: Sample persons age 18+ who have ever heard of a blood test for HIV and have ever been tested for HIV.
- 1991: Sample persons age 18+ who have ever been tested for HIV.
- 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ who have ever been tested for HIV.
- 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in Q3 and Q4 (excluded from Y2K supplement) who have ever been tested for HIV.
- 1994-1995: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from Y2K supplement) who have ever been tested for HIV.
- 2002: Sample Adults age 18+ who have been tested for HIV in the past 12 months.
