Description

For sample adults ages 18 and over who expect to have a test for the AIDS virus infection in the next 12 months (or, in 1987, who have thought about having a blood test for the AIDS virus infection), AIDTNLOC reports where the respondent would go for this test (e.g. AIDS clinic, employer clinic, doctor/HMO, etc.). See the Comparability and Universe tabs for complete information on changes of universe and response categories between samples.

Comparability

A change in universe limits comparability between the 1987 and 1988-1999 samples. In 1987, the universe was sample adults who ever thought about having a blood test for AIDS. From 1988 forward, the question was only asked of sample adults who expect to be tested in the next twelve months.

Changes in response categories affect comparability over time; response categories can be viewed on the Codes and Survey Text tabs.
Changes in survey design (e.g. quarters or subsamples in which the question was asked) change raw frequencies but do not affect comparability between samples. As always, data users should apply prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.

Universe

  • 1987: Sample persons age 18+ in Q3 (5th week) and Q4 who reported when saw/heard/read something about AIDS or who ever heard of AIDS and who have ever heard of a blood test for AIDS infection and ever thought about having a blood test.
  • 1988: Sample persons age 18+ in Q2, 3 and 4 who have heard of the blood test for HIV and expect to have be tested for HIV in the next 12 months and expect to have the test voluntarily, through blood donation or through an automatic testing program.
  • 1989: Sample adults age 18+ who have heard of the blood test for HIV and expect to be tested for HIV in the next 12 months and expect to have the test voluntarily.
  • 1990: Sample adults age 18+ who have heard of the blood test for HIV and expect to have be tested for HIV in the next 12 months.
  • 1991: Sample adults age 18+ who expect to be tested for HIV in the next 12 months.
  • 1992: Half of sample persons age 18+ who expect to be tested for HIV in the next 12 months.
  • 1993: Half of sample persons age 18+ in Q3 and Q4 (excluded from Y2K supplement) who expect to be tested for HIV in the next 12 months.
  • 1994-1995: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from Y2K supplement) who expect to be tested for HIV in the next 12 months.
  • 1997-1999: Sample adults age 18+ who expect to be tested for HIV in next 12 months.
