Description
For sample adults, DEPDYSCDC reports results for a summary measure that allows researchers to calculate the likelihood a respondent met the diagnostic criteria (i.e., psychiatric caseness) for the mental disorder major depression with dysphoric mood (i.e., feeling sad, blue, or depressed). DEPDYSCDC is an IPUMS NHIS-created variable that summarizes responses given to the series of questions making up the NHIS version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview - Short Form (CIDI-SF) for major depression with dysphoric mood. Apart from the value of 9 for persons not asked these questions, DEPDYSCDC has a value ranging from 0 to 7, with a score of 3 or more indicating a probable case for major depression with dysphoric mood.

As explained in greater detail in the variable description for DEP2WKEV, the NHIS version of the CIDI-SF instrument for dysphoric major depression began with a series of screening questions that determined whether respondents qualified for a second round of questioning on symptoms associated with dysphoric mood. Those who did not pass all the screening questions received a score of 0 in DEPDYSCDC. Those who reported taking anti-depressants during the screening questions were not asked about symptoms of dysphoric mood but were given a value of 3 in DEPDYSCDC. Those who passed the screening questions on dysphoric mood received one point for each of the 7 symptoms of depression they endorsed.
Two versions of the CIDI - SF for major depression with dysphoric mood were developed, one for the NHIS and one for the World Health Organization (WHO). The two versions differed in their skip patterns and thus their scoring system. As noted, DEPDYSCDC is based on the NHIS version of the CIDI - SF for major depression with dysphoric mood; for a synonymous summary measure for the WHO version, see DEPDYSWHO. Along with the inquiry into major depression with dysphoric mood, the NHIS made use of a CIDI - SF instrument to evaluate major depression with anhedonia (loss of interest in pleasurable activities) (see DEPLIFUN).
