Description
For sample adults, DEPANHWHO reports results for a summary measure that allows researchers to calculate the likelihood a respondent met the diagnostic criteria (i.e., psychiatric caseness) for the mental disorder major depression with anhedonia (i.e., loss of interest in pleasurable activities). DEPANHWHO is an IPUMS NHIS-created variable that summarizes responses given to the series of questions making up the World Health Organization (WHO) version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview - Short Form (CIDI-SF) for major depression with anhedonia. Apart from the value of 9 for persons not asked these questions, DEPANHWHO has a value ranging from 0 to 7, with a score of 3 or more indicating a probable case for major depression with anhedonia.
Related Variables for Scoring Major Depression
As explained in greater detail in the variable description for DEPLIFUN, the WHO version of the CIDI-SF instrument for major depression with anhedonia began with a series of three screening questions that determined whether respondents qualified for a second round of questioning on symptoms associated with anhedonia. Those who did not pass the first screening question received a score of 0 in DEPANHWHO. Those who passed the first screening question but not the second two received a score of 1 in DEPANHWHO. Those who passed all three screening questions on anhedonia received one point for each of the 6 symptoms of depression they endorsed. Summing the number of endorsed items relating to symptoms of depression and adding one point for passing the first screening question results in score ranging from 1 to 7. As noted, those who did not pass the first screening question received a score of 0.

The two versions differed in their skip patterns and thus their scoring system. As noted, DEPANHWHO is based on the WHO version of the CIDI - SF for major depression with anhedonia; for a synonymous summary measure for the NHIS version, see DEPANHCDC. Along with the inquiry into major depression with anhedonia, the NHIS made use of a CIDI - SF instrument to evaluate major depression with dysphoric mood (feeling sad, blue, or depressed) (see DEP2WKEV). Universe
- 1999: Sample adults age 18+ who either did NOT feel sad/blue/depressed all day long, most of the day, or about half of the day, every day or almost every day, for 2+ weeks during past 12 months, OR were on medication/anti-depressants OR whose feelings of being sad/blue/depressed, or the duration of these feelings, or the frequency of these feelings is unknown.
