Description
For sample adults, DEPDYSWHO reports results for a summary measure that allows researchers to calculate the likelihood a respondent met the diagnostic criteria (i.e., psychiatric caseness) for the mental disorder major depression with dysphoric mood (i.e., feeling sad, blue, or depressed). DEPDYSWHO is an IPUMS NHIS-created variable that summarizes responses given to the series of questions making up the World Health Organization (WHO) version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview - Short Form (CIDI-SF) for major depression with dysphoric mood. Apart from the value of 9 for persons not asked these questions, DEPDYSWHO has a value ranging from 0 to 7, with a score of 3 or more indicating a probable case for major depression with dysphoric mood.

As explained in greater detail in the variable description for DEP2WKEV, the WHO version of the CIDI-SF instrument for dysphoric major depression began with a series of screening questions that determined whether respondents qualified for a second round of questioning on symptoms associated with dysphoric mood. Those who did not pass all the screening questions received a score of 0 in DEPDYSWHO. Those who passed the screening questions on dysphoric mood received one point for each of the 7 symptoms of depression they endorsed.

The two versions differed in their skip patterns and thus their scoring system. As noted, DEPDYSWHO is based on the WHO version of the CIDI - SF for major depression with dysphoric mood; for a synonymous summary measure for the NHIS version, see DEPDYSCDC.
