DEPDYSWHO is a one-column variable.
0 = No symptoms of dysphoric depression
1 = One symptom of dsyphoric depression
2 = Two symptoms of dysphoric depression
3 = Three symptoms of dysphoric depression or took antidepressants
4 = Four symptoms of dysphoric depression
5 = Five symptoms of dysphoric depression
6 = Six symptoms of dysphoric depression
7 = Seven symptoms of dysphoric depression
9 = NIU
For sample adults, DEPDYSWHO reports results for a summary measure that allows researchers to calculate the likelihood a respondent met the diagnostic criteria (i.e., psychiatric caseness) for the mental disorder major depression with dysphoric mood (i.e., feeling sad, blue, or depressed). DEPDYSWHO is an IPUMS NHIS-created variable that summarizes responses given to the series of questions making up the World Health Organization (WHO) version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview - Short Form (CIDI-SF) for major depression with dysphoric mood. Apart from the value of 9 for persons not asked these questions, DEPDYSWHO has a value ranging from 0 to 7, with a score of 3 or more indicating a probable case for major depression with dysphoric mood.
Related Variables for Scoring Major Depression
As explained in greater detail in the variable description for DEP2WKEV, the WHO version of the CIDI-SF instrument for dysphoric major depression began with a series of screening questions that determined whether respondents qualified for a second round of questioning on symptoms associated with dysphoric mood. Those who did not pass all the screening questions received a score of 0 in DEPDYSWHO. Those who passed the screening questions on dysphoric mood received one point for each of the 7 symptoms of depression they endorsed.
Two versions of the CIDI - SF for major depression with dysphoric mood were developed, one for the World Health Organization (WHO) and one for NHIS. The two versions differed in their skip patterns and thus their scoring system. As noted, DEPDYSWHO is based on the WHO version of the CIDI - SF for major depression with dysphoric mood; for a synonymous summary measure for the NHIS version, see DEPDYSCDC. For further information about the two versions of the CIDI - SF for major depression with dysphoric mood and the scoring of each, see DEP2WKEV.
Along with the inquiry into major depression with dysphoric mood, the NHIS made use of a CIDI - SF instrument to evaluate major depression with anhedonia (loss of interest in pleasurable activities) (see DEPLIFUN). There are, again, both a WHO and an NHIS version of this instrument, and a complementary summary measure of psychiatric caseness for each (see DEPANHWHO and DEPANHCDC).
