Comparability
Changes to the universe may affect comparability over time. Prior to 2013, this question was asked of all sample adults. However, from 2013-2018, the universe was further restricted to sample adults who were prescribed prescription medication in the past 12 months. Beginning in 2019, this question was asked of all sample adults and sample children who have taken prescription medication in the past 12 months.
Changes to the questionnaire may also affect comparability over time. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
