For sample adults who have taken a prescription medication in the past 12 months (PREMEDYR), YSKIMPMEDYR indicates if the respondent, concerning the use of prescription medication, took less medicine to save money in the past 12 months. In 2011-2012, YSKIMPMEDYR was asked of all sample adults and in 2013-2018 it was asked of all sample adults who were prescribed prescription medication in the past 12 months (PRESMED12MO).
Changes to the universe over time may affect the comparability of this variable. For example, someone who was prescribed a medication but did not take the medication was not in universe in 2019 forward. However, they would be in universe for 2013-2018, regardless of whether they actually took the medication.
Changes to the questionnaire may also affect comparability over time. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
