Description

For sample adults who were employed in the previous week (EMPSTAT) and who work in an organization with at least 50 employees (NUMEMPLOC50), WHISTDUS indicates whether the respondent participated in programs on sexually transmitted diseases available at their workplace. This follow-up question is asked after another question elicits which programs are offered by the employer (WHISTD).

In 1994, interviewers asked, "In the past 12 months, which programs did you participate in at your workplace?" In 1998, interviewers asked, "In the past year, which programs did you PARTICIPATE IN at your workplace?" Respondents were then referred to a card with nine specific choices (including "sexually transmitted diseases (including HIV or AIDS)") plus "other." (The survey form instructs interviewers to read the categories selected in (WHISTD) if it is a telephone interview.) Interviewers are further instructed to probe for additional answers by asking, "Anything else?" and to mark all categories that apply.

Other choices specified included:

  • Health information at work used: Don't know or refused (WHIDK)
